Net Art's Biography
Net Art is run by me, Andrew Leonard, originally from England (moved to Northern Ireland after marrying a wee Northern Irish lass).
I first encountered the internet way back in 1989 whilst undertaking a University research project in computer interactive learning fro Building Surveyors. Images and text were displayed on a computer screen and the user created their own learning environment by clicking on the images and text. Depending upon what was clicked further information would be displayed.
Does it sound familiar? - that's right what I was doing was in fact the forerunner to the internet,
At that time this was cutting edge technology along with the cd rom, which had only just been invented, little did anybody realise in 1989 exactly how much this would change the world.
After graduating from University, I then pursued a professional career in London as a Chartered Building Surveyor, but even during the first few years of the 1990s I realised what I had been researching at University was starting to become reality. I secured my first client back in 1993 and designed their corporate website for them (a London property company) and over the years i designed many more websites for various people, whilst still working as a Chartered Surveyor.
In the late 1990s I realised that the internet was going to start to replace certain high street stores and that certain products and services where ideally suited for the internet. So in 1999 I created a website selling a very niche product "Inflated Helium Balloons" and gave up my Survying carrer to become an internet retailer. I built the entire website, including building my own ecommerce software from scratch (wasn't freely available like it is now) and quickly I established myself as one of the leading internet balloon retailers in the UK. When I moved to Northern ireland, we had to stop selling balloons because they kept bursting when they where shipped across the water (To enable the balloons to arrive on time we used Royal Mail Special Delivery, which resulted in balloons bursting due to changes in atmospheric pressure, as the Royal Mail used air freight to ensure they arrived on time).
During that time I learnt a lot on how to efficiently run an ecommerce website both "out front" and in the "back office", online customer service and computer programming languages beyond the basic html used to create a web page.
I used those skills to create a number of websites for our own use.
During 2009 I started to hear stories about companies who had in my opinion been "ripped" off by unscrupulous web design companies. There seems to be a lot of people in Northern Ireland who have "jumped" on the internet band wagon calling their self an internet "expert" when they have had very little experience in building or even running a website.
As you can see I have had many many years experience and witnessed many changes over those years.
